About Mould
What is mould?
Mould is a type of fungus. It grows in multicellular filaments called hyphae. As a diverse fungal species it thrives in damp conditions. Mould degrades whatever it grows on as it gradually digests it. In order to spread mould releases tiny coloured airborne spores. Often these spores consist of mycotoxins and allergens, and it's these that can affect your health and cause allergic reactions. Head over to our common types of mould page to find out more.
Where does mould develop?
Reducing energy costs by making our homes more airtight is a priority nowadays. However there is a downside to doing this. Without proper ventilation and airflow condensation develops and your home will quickly become infected with mould. Mould can grow in any room of your house. It’s not isolated to bathrooms and kitchens. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, even hallways can all be affected by mould.
Mould usually blooms around window frames, on ceilings above showers, hobs, sinks and baths. It can even grow behind furniture, wardrobes and on mattresses. Its commonly found on or near external walls. Mould occurs as fungi that colonizes porous building materials, such as wood, plastered walls and plastic windows. Your home will slowly begin to degrade and your health will start to suffer.
What causes mould?
Inefficient ventilation is the main cause of mould in a property. Increased condensation creates the perfect conditions for mould to grow. Damp and humid conditions aid the growth of fungal colonies. Like other living organisms mould needs moisture to thrive. The more moisture you have in the air, the more mould growth you will have on your walls, ceilings, floors and so on.

Fungal organisms eat away at timber, plaster and even concrete. As mould breaks down the molecular structure of its host, this structure is weakened. Plaster will crumble, timber will rot and concrete will disintegrate.
How can I remove black mould?
Black mould in UK homes is a common problem. There are many products available to kill and clean mould. However if the underlying cause of the mould is not addressed it will keep coming back. Here at CMS we can help. Identifying the problem and then fixing it is our speciality. We can install energy efficient ventilation that keeps condensation under control in your property. Check out our PIV Installation page to find out more.
How can I prevent mould?
Keeping windows on vent (slightly open) is a good start. Making sure you have a working extractor in your kitchen or bathroom is important too. Keeping windows on vent during the winter months however is not usually desirable. During this time windows are often closed. This creates temperature differences between the outside and inside of your home. As a result condensation develops and which provides the perfect conditions for mould to thrive.
You can reduce the humidity of your home by using extractor fans in rooms prone to condensation and dampness. Worst affected areas are bathrooms, showers and kitchens.
Bedrooms are also common areas, especially around windows. During the winter months, to keep warm at night, people will sleep with the bedroom door and window closed. There is water vapour in your breath. When it comes into contact with cooler areas on and around your window, in condenses into lots of tiny droplets of liquid water. Eventually mould will start to grow on porous surfaces such as window frames, sills and adjacent walls.
Attention landlords
We recommend educating your tenants in ways to identify mould. If its spotted early its much easier to deal with. Its important to remember that you are responsible if your tenants health is affected by a poorly maintained property. Make sure extractor fans are installed and in good working order.
Install positive input ventilation (PIV) is nessecary. The accumulation of condensation and subsecuent growth of mould will be prevented. If in any doubt we recommend getting mould survey.

When should I seek professional advice?
If you have mould in your home that covers an area roughly the size of your hand, or bigger, its time to seek professional advice. The sooner you act, the easier it will be to stop mould spreading and to get rid of it. Mould removal is only the first part of the treatment process. Preventing it from coming back is the next step.
Depending on the severity of the mould infection we might assess whether damp proofing is required. Damp proofing is often required in basements and ground level areas of your home. This is carried out by our engineers. Testing to determine whether PIV installation is necessary will also take place. PIV will improve air quality, reduce condensation and stop mould and damp from recurring on walls, ceilings and windows.
Can I tackle mould myself
You might be able to remove mould yourself by cleaning it and painting over it. However, unless you address the underlying cause it will always grow back. Also consider that if you use products that contain bleach you will aggravate the mould causing it to release spores into the air. These spores will have be detrimental to your health.
Here at CMS we have developed a professional black mould removal service using products that don't contain bleach. Our system is proven and guaranteed to work. We apply a top level mould removal solution. This kills the visible mould growth. The second stage penetrates deep into the substrate and kills the roots of the mould. Ventilation is then optimised, replaced or reinforced with PIV.
